The League Returns

Hello, hello what’s going on? What’s all this shouting? We’ll have no trouble here!

You must have heard the local news by now – we’re going straight back to Royston Vasey later on this year! (Did we ever leave, that’s the question).

The BBC have confirmed the return of much-loved dark sitcom The League of Gentlemen, frontlined by Mark Gatiss, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton, with Jeremy Dyson completing the foursome from behind the camera.

In terms of being part of the fandom, I’m fairly new to the game considering it’s approaching its 20th anniversary. I absolutely binged it earlier this year after discovering it was the same writers of the beautifully twisted Inside No. 9, a show I had fallen in love with since watching an episode at uni.

For whatever reason at the time, I had felt myself become disenfranchised with script writing, but both Inside and League reignited that little flame inside of me. Not only did I want to watch them all the time, but I also wanted to know where the ideas came from, how they grew, how they were worked and stretched. I wanted to know everything, so I watched every single video and read every article I could find… I became thoroughly engrossed in Royston Vasey and the masterminds behind it.

We’re expecting three special episodes to be aired this year, and that’s all the information that’s been released so far. How exciting!

If you haven’t watched The League of Gentlemen, you can stream it on Netflix or get the DVD from the usual places like Amazon and HMV – it’s as simple as Mickey. I can’t recommend it enough, and surely as someone who’s seen each episode upwards of 10 times, that’s a good enough endorsement for you?

Just bear in mind that once you arrive at Royston Vasey, you’ll never leave…

Film, Review

Review: Deadpool

deadpool-poster-8I have never been a fan or an advocate of superhero films; the Marvel and DC universes have just never pulled me in like they have millions of other cinema-goers. Actually, I can count on one hand which superhero films I appreciate every now and then: Batman: The Dark Knight, Guardians of the Galaxy, Kickass and Deadpool = 4  / 1,000+

I was skeptical at first because it’s another film flung onto the pile of generic masculine movies about characters with extraordinary powers. I would be guaranteed…… [Click here to read more]

Sam’s Film Reviews

He won’t be happy about this, I don’t think, but I’m starting a new review format on my blog (not replacing mine!) that features Sam, my boyf, bf, boy, bae, whatever, giving his succinctly worded film reviews. They will be to the point, blunt and ever so slightly humorous (but more so if you know him because you can actually hear his voice when you read it which makes it all the more amusing.)

I’ll probably get intro trouble for this, but I’ll take the risk. Keep an eye out for an update later today 😉

New Page: Life on Mars

“My name is Sam Tyler.

I had an accident and woke up in 1973.

Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time?

Whatever’s happened, it’s like I’ve landed on a different planet.

Now, maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home.”

This is my favourite TV show and I remember actually watching it when it was being broadcast on the TV, which I’m afraid I can’t say a lot for nowadays. As soon as I watched the first episode, I was hooked, it was like something I had never seen before and I just fell in love with it immediately. It has to be said that my favourite character is the might Gene Hunt, Detective Chief Inspector of the Greater Manchester Police in 1973. I mean, it’s such an original idea: a cop from 2006 is in a car accident and when he wakes up, he’s gone back in time by 33 years, he’s been demoted to Detective Inspector and gets flashbacks to his childhood as a four year old and hears hospital noises from the  present day.

I’m not going to go into some massive review about it, there’s no point and I can’t be bothered to be frank. But I will say that I found it so easy to fall in love with all the characters; Sam, Gene, Chris, Ray and Annie and then all the extras that dip in and out as they do in dramas.

So instead of going off on one about how amazing Life on Mars is, this page is going to be filled with pictures and things like that, because they’re far more interesting than reading the crap that comes out of my brain and onto the computer, right? :)

BUT! DO NOT confuse this Life on Mars with the utterly SHITE American rip off. No, just no. It even got cancelled before the first series finished. Only watch the English version. The only version.
